My Life: Khadijah, 17, Essex

1 min read
I moved here from east Africa when I was 15 and I wasn't really told why but after some time in England I realised it was for my protection.

At first, I missed my family very much but over time I have got used toit.

I was put in foster care and had a hard time with the language. As aMuslim I found it difficult to live in a Christian home.

My foster carer tried hard and even did not cook pork for meals. However, I still felt uncomfortable.

I was in foster care for a year and completed my GCSEs when I was 16 andwas moved to semi-independent housing near my college.

For the first two months I found it hard and I wanted to go back tofoster care. I was told that I couldn't. So I had to get used to it andlooked at the positive side - being free, managing my own budget andcooking for myself. If I need advice I can chat to the Laches managersand children's rights officer.
