My Life: Craig Thompson, 16, Merseyside

I want to work on oil rigs and have been learning the basics of building at Rathbone's new centre in Speke. It has a construction unit and a bungalow where you can put in pipes, lay floorboards and do plastering.

I heard about Rathbone from friends and if I wasn't there, I'd just be lying around in bed. The course is practical and the tutors are really sound. Being there has made me want get up and get out there and earn some money. I hated sitting in a classroom and left school in Year 11. I thought about being a mechanic, but the teachers just wanted me to pass exams.

Apart from doing construction, I've been having classes on things like knife crime. I saw an incident when someone pulled a knife - and it does make me nervous. People carry knives for protection and tougher punishments will not stop them.
