What is it? Montessori Children's Centre nursery is the first Montessori nursery to be based in a children's centre. The nursery sits in the Windmill Children's Centre in Ramsey. Although the curriculum is still based on the Early Years Foundation Stage, the setting is run using the Montessori approach.
What does that mean? The Montessori method is based on the philosophy that young children benefit most from self-directed learning and from playing and learning with each other. The key to the approach is to provide an environment that stimulates the senses and encourages exploration.
How does this work? The permanent staff in the nursery are all trained in the Montessori approach. The environment is uncluttered, calm and filled with opportunities for free, open-ended play. Children of all ages learn together as opposed to being segregated by age group. There is also free flow snack time, free access to the outdoors and indoor movement activities.
