
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has said it plans to let parents apply to exempt their child from the new curriculum, but individual nurseries will not be allowed to opt out.
The policy, which will be presented to Parliament later this year, is likely to cause problems for Steiner and Montessori nurseries, which may want to opt out of the literacy and numeracy aspects of the EYFS. Steiner nurseries, for example, do not start formal learning until children reach the age of six.
Richard House, senior lecturer in psychotherapy at Roehampton University and a member of the Open Eye campaign, which opposes elements of the EYFS, said the policy could lead to huge confusion.
