Media: North East press coverage under examination

The organisation has gathered copies of 10 local and regional publications from the past month and will be analysing their content to judge how fairly they portray young people.

Our North East Summit, an event held at the regional government office last August, was the trigger for the research project. The summit enabled regional decision-makers and young people to discuss how the region could improve.

Media portrayal of young people emerged as a major issue, which decision-makers pledged to act upon. The results of the research are likely to feed into a media campaign.

Melissa Jordan, project support officer for the youth work unit, who is conducting the research, said: "The government office wants to see whether the image of young people portrayed in the media is really that bad, or if it's just a perception out there."
