North east: LSC plans discount travel for students

1 min read

The regional office has commissioned consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers to examine the feasibility of a North East-wide discount scheme. The work is led by a steering group chaired by LSC North East, with representation from bodies including regional development agency One NorthEast and the Association of North East Councils.

A report due next month will estimate the cost of a concessionary travel scheme and establish whether a subsidy can be introduced this year.

The work was welcomed by Kirsty Beeston, regional participation officer at the North East Regional Youth Work Unit, which has been supporting members of the region's youth assembly in their campaign for concessionary bus travel for 14- to 19-year-olds in education or training. She said: "Young people are choosing to go to a different college from their first choice because they can't afford to get to it."
