You won't be surprised to hear that I'm right behind Young People Now's Positive Images campaign. According to the research, nearly three in four press stories involving young people are negative.
But increasing the number of good news stories that appear in the press isn't all that easy. Getting a small mention on the bottom of page 11 is one thing. But making it on to the front page is a tougher challenge.
Last week, I thought I'd cracked it. This time I had the perfect good news story. Or so I thought. Back in 1951, Southend elected its first youth mayor, an idea that was well ahead of its time. For a further 20 years, various young people took on this prestigious role, which only came to an end when local government was reorganised in 1971.
