When it comes to unpacking and understanding budgets, I'm usually left feeling like a bit of a dummy. It's not that I can't work out the numbers. It is the process of understanding what they all mean that I find tricky.

But help could be on its way if a great idea from across the Atlantic catches on over here. Apparently, New York officials are just about to launch a new publication designed to decode the mystery of the education budget for taxpayers and anyone else who is interested.

The bright yellow, brilliantly titled Education Budget for Dummies might look the same as other books in the Dummies Guide series. But instead of explaining how to use a computer or pick out fine wine, this particular guide is full of facts and figures about how the city will spend its $20bn budget this year.
