I used to be a smoker. But I finally managed to kick the habit five years ago. It took quite a few attempts, but I got there in the end. And although I know it's a bit of cliche, it really was the best thing I ever did.

My smoking career started when I was 13, at about the time I started attending my local youth club. Was this just a coincidence? I'm afraid not. The truth is that attending a youth club made me smoke. I just hope Margaret Hodge doesn't get to hear about this one.

Now, before anyone suggests that I would have been better off staying at home and watching the telly, I want to point out that my local club had a hugely positive effect on me. It was a good place to be. And the youth workers were great. But they did like a fag.
