What do Gloucestershire, Somerset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire and Devon have in common? Well, it's a little known fact that they're all places where I tried to get my first youth work job. It was 1995, and after three years of university I was more than ready to swap attending seminars and writing essays for the keys to my very own youth club.

But could I get a job? Was that a pig that just flew over the pool table?

After months of back-to-back interviews I was getting nowhere fast - even with a diploma, degree and five years of part-time youth work experience behind me. But no, it simply wasn't meant to be.
