The Newham Schools' Magazine project was set up by Newmartin Community Youth Trust, a local voluntary organisation. Five schools have already taken part in producing a pilot issue, funded with 1,700 from the Children's Fund, with the help of a group of 41 young people aged 11 to 14.
Jim Murphy, student leadership co-ordinator at Little Ilford School, which is working with Newmartin on setting up the scheme, said: "The vision is to have a forum for all school councils in the area and the magazine will be linked to that. We also hope to sell advertising to raise funds, and turn it into a youth enterprise."
