Project: Live Music Now

Mission: To curb antisocial behaviour and give young people confidence

Funding: £10,000 from Youth Music, Arts Council England and an anonymous benefactor. Venue, food and staff provided by youth offending team

Young people at risk of offending in North Somerset have been working on their musical skills to build their confidence.

The group of 14 young people, aged between 12 and 15, from Weston-super-Mare worked with professional musicians as part of a series of workshops to engage young people in both live music and music technology.

North Somerset Youth Offending Team (YOT) teamed up with national music charity Live Music Now to hold the seminars. The project involved five professional musicians, including a rapper, giving basic instrumental tuition and guidance. Laptops were also given to young people who felt uncomfortable performing to allow them to produce their own songs independently.
