Why are they used? Multi-sensory rooms are designed to promote relaxation, enjoyment and exploration among pre-school children. They are full of lights, sounds, smells and textures to inspire curiosity. These environments inspire the senses and are often a particularly useful learning aid for children with special educational needs.
How does it work? In this particular room, nursery nurses have created an under-the-sea adventure. The sounds of whales and dolphins play in the background, with blue light projected across the room and ultraviolet lights to symbolise the bright tropical fish. Aromatherapy is also used to create smells of the seaside, and there are even small sprays of water for authenticity.
What are the results? The children are developing communication and language skills in an environment where learning is fun.
Anything else? The room is also proving popular with parents as they get to come in and have some fun with their children or alternatively take advantage of the relaxing atmosphere and wind down after work.
