LGBT: Project to address sex health issues

1 min read

The Rainbow Project, based in Belfast and Derry, which runs a group for gay young men, has received about 8,000 from sources including Belfast City Council to carry out the initiative.

The peer education project will consist of a series of training workshops with young men to learn about sexual health. Participants will also make a film on sexual health for other LGB young people.

Trevor McMahon, outreach co-ordinator at the project, said a lack of access to LGB youth projects across the country means that LGB young people find it difficult to get appropriate information.

"Sex education in schools is also overly religious, which means high numbers of LGB young people are unaware of sexual health issues," he said, adding that health professionals need to be made more aware of the needs of LGB young people, especially lesbians and bisexual young women.
