Launched by mental health charity Mind, with support from the Community Fund, the research shows that LGB people of all ages in England and Wales report more psychological distress than heterosexuals.
Professor Michael King and Eamonn McKeown, of University College London, said agencies working with children and young people, such as schools, youth services and health and social services, should develop anti-bullying policies relating to sexuality. They also called for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence to include guidance for preventing self-harm among young LGB people.
Jan Bridget, the project co-ordinator at Gay and Lesbian Youth in Calderdale, said: "Lesbians, gays and bisexuals are subjected to a lot of discrimination, which is linked to mental and physical health."
