Child rearing is in part a process whereby society's standards of beliefand behaviour are passed from one generation to another. Promoting theidea that hitting another person is the best way to sort out problems isnot the best way to nurture the young.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child reminds us thatchildren and young people are people too and that they also have theright not to be hit. Messages to children and young people aboutrespecting others and not hitting them are lost when they themselvesexperience being smacked by adults, or when they see other childrenbeing treated in this way.
