Letter: Good practice in Cornwall

Having read NCH policy advisor George McNamara's recommendation that Sure Start programmes "make more effort to reach out to vulnerable groups, such as those with disabilities", I would like to highlight some good practice in Cornwall (Children Now, 21-27 September).

Sure Start local programmes are working with the Special ParentingService to support parents with children who have learning disabilities. This group is particularly hard to reach and their families have complexneeds.

Services include a parenting assessment provided by the service, followed by ongoing teaching. A big focus of the intervention is toenhance family preservation by increasing parenting skills and promotingdevelopment. Most parents have increased their skills as a result andthe support has assisted in deregistering or preventing registration ofchildren on the Cornwall Child Protection Register.
