Letters: Targeted support a challenge

I welcome the priority the Children Now Manifesto gives to resettlement services for young offenders leaving custody (Children Now, 6-12 June).

The example in the article might be taken to suggest that resettlementis only a process involving youth offending teams (YOTs) working withyoung people in or leaving custody. We know that effective resettlementwork brings together YOTs in partnership with secure estate staff inplanning support and engagement with mainstream agencies andvoluntary/community groups.

The Youth Justice Board framework goes further and identifiesresettlement in four phases - pre-court, community, custody and afterthe end of the licence.

The challenge is in the last phase - ensuring mainstream servicesprovide ongoing targeted support to the young people who need itmost.

Graham Robb, interim chair, Youth Justice Board for England andWales.
