Letters: Childcare and bad behaviour

1 min read
Following recent reports about the negative effects of early years and childcare provision on school age children (Children Now, April 4-11), I would urge the sector to remember it is being blamed for perceived problems that are not being addressed later - at school.

All schools need to listen to children and reflect on their changing andindividual needs. They need sound strategies to meet children's needs, learning styles, their need to play and their natural energy. This willsupport children to develop social and behavioural skills.

Children who attend childcare before they start school are perhaps moreconfident and assertive, as they have been supported to know they canexercise their rights to choice. They may even be more active learnersor have further developed play skills because of their experience ofquality childcare.

The early years and childcare sector should not be criticised for aproblem that occurs later in a child's development.
