Letters: Kinship carers need support

Thank goodness for Robert Tapsfield of the Fostering Network who recognises that kinship carers need financial support too (Children Now, 11-17 April).

But will his words of wisdom be heeded by the Department for Educationand Skills? Many of us have been trying to get this issue addressed bythe Government for sometime.

Since December last year, Grandparents Plus has contributed to threereports on kinship care: Forgotten Families (with Adfam) on the needs ofgrandparents raising grandchildren as a result of substance misuse inthe family; a joint response (with 12 others) to the Care Matters greenpaper; and Mentor UK's Minding the Gap policy recommendations.

All have called for increased financial support for kinship carers.

Last week I met a grandmother on the verge of eviction for rent arrears;her eight-year-old granddaughter was about to be taken into care - aresult of inadequate support for a pensioner raising her grandchild.
