Letter: Youth justice reform is needed

The Children's Society is delighted by the Government's clear commitment to putting the welfare of the child at the heart of its legislation in the Queen's speech. The Children's Society is fully committed to the implementation of the Every Child Matters agenda and the need to make this a reality for all children.

But this is currently not a reality for children in the criminal justice and asylum systems. We urge the Government to ensure that all children are treated equally.

We are disappointed the Government has not announced the introduction of a Bill to improve the response to children who are in trouble with the law. A draft Youth Justice Bill was proposed in the last parliamentary session and The Children's Society would like to see this brought forward.

Given the high numbers of deaths of children in custody and the placement of vulnerable children in prison, urgent action is needed.

A fundamental review of the system is needed if welfare needs are to be consistently met for children in trouble with the law.
