Letter: Why play is essential

1 min read
I was interested to learn of the Children's Play Council and The Children's Society's findings about outdoor play (Children Now, 3-16 August).

ContinYou totally agrees with the charities' assertion that "play is afundamental part of a child's psychological and physical development"and that "we must ensure that we protect every child's right toplay".

These arguments form part of the driving force behind ContinYou's workwith the play council and SkillsActive to ensure all forms of play areintrinsic to the development and delivery of the Government's core offerto children and young people and the development of full serviceextended schools.

We also believe play is essential to healthy development. As well asbeing fun, play is a powerful tool for learning that encourages thedevelopment of life skills. By placing increased emphasis on theimportance of play, schools will be far more likely to add value totheir health-related programmes by engaging their pupils in physicalactivity and ensuring the "eight to six offer" becomes a realistic,non-classroom driven concept that they can enjoy and get maximum benefitfrom.
