A recent trip to Berlin enabled her to check out advances in playgrounddesign. "In Germany they use a lot of landscape designers to work onplaygrounds," she says. She was particularly impressed with a water playarea, where children were allowed to move boulders around and wereengaged in writing using water and twigs, and areas which children couldmake their own.
"There is a lot of access to green natural play space in the schools wesaw, and even the small grounds have a variety of play types," she says."There are places where children appear to be hidden from teachers, andare able to feel that they are on their own, which is veryimportant."
