
The reduction in public sector spending since 2010 severely blunted its impact, but there is evidence that the strategy raised the status of play and left an imprint that can still be seen nearly a decade on.
The Play Strategy for England
The strategy was a key feature of the 2007 Children's Plan: Building Brighter Futures. This overarching document set out the government's vision to "make England the best place in the world to grow up". It committed £235m to build or refurbish 3,500 play areas. Most councils received £1.1m to create 20 public play areas; however, 30 authorities were designated as play pathfinders and handed £2.5m each to develop new, staffed adventure playgrounds and create or renew around 25 public play areas.
