LETTER: Strategy for communication

The Education and Skills Select Committee's inquiry into special educational needs provides an important opportunity to highlight the importance of helping children to communicate.

Communication is a vital skill and the absence of a national strategyfor communication is jeopardising children's literacy, learning andsocial development. But there is clear evidence that children'scommunication needs are not being met since 50 per cent of childrenstart school lacking the skills required to start learning.

I Can would like to see a three-pronged programme to support children'sspeech and language development introduced. This programme shouldinclude children with a communication disability.

This programme must be implemented across all school and educationsettings, ensure that all families have access to advice on supportingtheir children's development, and address the postcode lottery ofprovision.
