Letter: Sex education

The state shouldn't fund the teaching of sexual abstinence (Children Now, 19-25 April). Because the state claims to be neutral in the case of religious belief, it should remain neutral on this issue, and should neither promote it nor negate it.

Children should be provided with basic information so they know how thebody functions. Whether teachers are secular or religious, there is aresponsibility to make sure children know the facts. The role ofeducation should be to equip children with the facts so they can maketheir own decisions about life. It's important that before they make adecision they know both sides of the story.

Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, leader, Muslim Parliament of Great Britain.
