Letter: Listening to parents

At Contact a Family we receive enquiries from professionals who know they need to be listening to parents, and who want to be, but are uncertain about how to go about it. At the same time there seems to be a shift in focus and resources away from parents towards the involvement of children and young people.

Listening to one without the other will not give a clear picture of howto best design or improve services. There are examples from around thecountry of successful parental involvement. Many lessons about howparent participation can work well have already been learned and thereare some great models.

If any Children Now readers require support and information aboutlistening to and involving parents of disabled children, they can get intouch with us. Visit www.cafamily.org.uk or email me atliz.ranger@cafamily.org.uk Liz Ranger, parent participation manager,Contact a Family.
