Disability: Employers fail to support parents

1 min read
Employers are failing to honour legal obligations to provide flexible working for parents who care for sick and disabled children, campaigners have warned.

The finding is from a study conducted over four years for Carers UK andContact a Family. The study identified the barriers faced by parentcarers of sick or disabled children in employment.

Researchers found parents of disabled children wanted to work to helpmaintain an identity outside their parental and carer role as well ashelp with family finances.

Parents of disabled children under 18 have a legal right to requestflexible or part-time working. However the report, Caring for Sick andDisabled Children: Parents' experiences of combining work and care, found that employers were often unsympathetic to requests for flexibleworking. Many parents had to use their paid annual leave to care forchildren meaning they did not get a break from work or caringthemselves.
