Listening to Parents

2 mins read
Organisations involved with children need to be more creative and have stronger leadership in the way they consult with parents, according to a report by the Family and Parenting Institute (FPI) and National Consumer Council.

The report is aimed at giving guidance to schools, councils, nurseries and children's centres to improve their communication with parents. Among the most effective organisations at consulting were those that had appointed a dedicated worker, to ensure parents are being involved in decision making and are being targeted in the best way.

This role could be filled in a variety of ways, including the appointment of a parent as a "parents' champion".

The report recommends larger organisations, such as councils, appoint a dedicated parent consultation worker to co-ordinate approaches to parents and push through action in response to their needs.

A warning is given that creating specialised roles does not mean that other staff should take a back seat in parental consultation. The issue is everyone's responsibility, the report argues, adding that all organisations need to support staff with training in this area.
