Letter: Alcohol is also a drug

It is estimated that there are up to 100,000 children in Scotland whose parents have problems with alcohol and up to 60,000 whose parents have problems with illegal drugs. Childline reports that three times as many children phone about parental alcohol issues compared to illegal drug problems.

The principle that children's needs are of paramount concern, therefore, requires that any consideration of testing parents for substance use inchild protection situations reflects this reality. The same principlealso supports informed discussion about whether testing can indeed helpin new ways.
