Featuring a team of specialist practitioners, the Family Drug and Alcohol Court works to find solutions to keep families together

What is the Family Drug and Alcohol Court?

The Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) is a specialist court focused on family-based interventions aimed at improving outcomes for children of parents with substance misuse problems, to ensure a safe and stable family for them to live with. Its main purpose is to help parents overcome alcohol or drug misuse, and where possible, keep families together.

It operates within the framework of care proceedings, but differs significantly from regular care proceedings in a number of ways. The first pilot FDAC was established in November 2007 at the Inner London Family Proceedings Court.

The FDAC is particularly unique in that it has within it a specialist, multi-disciplinary team of practitioners including social workers and health professionals, whose role is to carry out assessments and develop and implement individual intervention plans for parents subject to cases before the court.
