One night when Jane had been drinking she fell asleep and her cigarettestarted a fire in the house. Simon and Richard, her two sons aged nineand 11, were placed with foster parents and her local social servicesteam referred Jane to the Family Alcohol Service project, while itcarried out a full assessment of the family's situation.
The service was asked to work with Jane and her problem drinking. Usingstrengths-based counselling, Jane and a project worker explored theissues thrown up by her experiences and explored how these impacted onher life and parenting. This included looking at Jane's difficultchildhood, the early death of her parents and her time in care, andyears of domestic violence, which had affected her self worth and hercapacity to parent her two boys.
