Learning centres plan for Knowsley

Education
A project is under way in Knowsley to demolish all 10 of the Merseyside council's secondary schools and replace them with seven brand new "learning centres".

The Future Schooling programme is funded by a £150m Building Schools for the Future grant. Knowsley is one of the few local authorities using the money to replace its existing schools entirely.

The project includes a specialist centre for 200 three to 19-year-olds with special educational needs, which will be funded by a £16.5m private finance initiative.

A spokeswoman for Knowsley Council said developing links with the community was at the heart of the project.

"The learning centres will be very different from the schools you see at the moment," she said. "They will be community resources and offer integrated child, youth and family services, as well as provide a more flexible approach to learning."
