The council's children, young people and families working group, which includes councillors, members of the Youth Parliament and council officers, presented its report to the council's cabinet last month, including the recommendation that, where appropriate, children should be separated for sex education classes to tackle the rate of teenage pregnancy in the borough.
At the meeting the cabinet approved the idea and in an official statement said: "The cabinet agrees with the recommendation and requests the executive director for children and family services to instruct the Healthy Schools Service to ensure that the guidance developed includes information and advice on when the delivery of SRE may be more appropriate in a single sex setting."
