Sex and Relationships Education Guidance

1 min read
The government is due to make Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education compulsory in all schools in England in 2011, which includes sex and relationship education (SRE).

Full guidance for the implementation and delivery of compulsory PSHE will be developed. However, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has considered it necessary to produce revised guidance for SRE before PSHE education is introduced.

Head teachers and governing bodies will be legally required to use this guidance. The purpose of the guidance is to advise schools on what issues to consider when drafting policies for the delivery of SRE, and is intended for primary, secondary and special schools, and pupil referral units (PRUs). It replaces the existing SRE guidance for schools and it will look at how they can deliver high-quality SRE. The guidance will also look at how schools can support the health and social needs of all pupils in regard to sex and relationships, and how they should develop SRE policies. It is intended for all school staff and senior managers, but especially for staff who are responsible for the co-ordination, teaching and the support of SRE delivery. The consultation is open to schools, PRUs, young people, local authorities, parents, carers and all professionals working with young people in health, children's services and education. The DCSF is due to publish the consultation results in summer and the final version of the guidance later this year.
