Labour Party Conference: Childcare - Group calls for pay equal toteachers'

Childcare workers should receive the same pay as teachers, according to a raft of recommendations being put forward by left wing think-tank Compass.

In its report, The Good Society, which was presented at the Labour Partyconference this week, Compass says that, on average, childcare workersearn less than supermarket staff.

This is undermining morale and offers little incentive to train forhigher qualifications.

It recommends that pay be brought in line with the teaching profession, which it says would boost the average annual salary in childcare from7,500 to 22,000.

The report also praised children's centres and calls on their role to beextended to become "neighbourhood centres", offering additional servicessuch as legal advice and relationship support.
