Not so Beverley Hughes. The children's minister is responsible for anagenda that is well resourced and widely supported. And, after 16 monthsin post, she has cemented her reputation as more than just a safe pairof hands to deliver it. "She is one of the most caring, conscientiousand committed ministers we have," enthused fellow MP David Kidney in onefringe session.
Hughes says one of the most encouraging aspects at the conference hasbeen the buzz around the children's agenda.
Family support crucial
"I've been very pleased with the interest," she says. "It's veryimportant for us, as a party, to see the need to support families, andhelp children achieve their potential, not as just issues of fairnessand morally the right thing to do, but also as essential for oureconomic position. The two things go together and our party membersunderstand that."
