Interview: The workforce reformer - Jane Haywood, chief executive,Children's Workforce Development Council

2 mins read
Last night Jane Haywood was dancing to the disco hit YMCA with young people around a camp fire. This morning she's at her desk getting to grips with being the new chief executive of the Children's Workforce Development Council.

"It helps me do my job better," she says of her 30-year involvement withthe five-week summer camp she organises with Kirklees Youth Service.

"It keeps me in touch with what the issues are when you're working withchildren and young people."

Having only been in her new post for a few weeks she has a lot to dealwith. Not least is transforming the Children's Workforce Strategy intoan action plan because, despite widespread agreement on its vision amongthose who work with children, there is no consensus on how to achieveits aims (Children Now, 3-16 August).

"I actually welcome the fact that the strategy doesn't have all theanswers, that the Government is asking the sector what needs to be done"she says. "What the council has to do is to ensure the Department forEducation and Skills' response to the consultation, which is due inOctober, is clear on what will be done and when."
