Interview: The voice of experience - Estelle Morris, chair, Children's Workforce Development Council

2 mins read
Estelle Morris had had a busy morning. When Children Now caught up with her she was taking a well-earned break from clearing out her old MP's office in Birmingham.

But the real work starts next week when the former education secretary takes up her new role as the first chair of the Children's Workforce Development Council. And she is raring to go.

"I've always seen the children's sector as incredibly important," she says. "It's vital we get things right but when you look at the training opportunities that are available, the routes for progression, the links between the different services, it's not as good as it should be. Throughout my time in politics I've tried to address some of these issues and this is another opportunity to do that."

Until she stepped down last month, Morris was Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley. A former teacher, she was elected to Parliament in 1992 and took over from David Blunkett as education secretary in 2001.
