Interview: Pushing the nursery limits

Some nurseries are reluctant to accept children with complex healthproblems. They're worried staff do not have the necessary skills,fearful of what might go wrong, and concerned about extra costs. ButMcDonald is adamant that all children are welcome at Rockbourne. And itis this attitude that won her the accolade of Nursery Carer of the Year2006.

She was nominated by the mother of one of the children who attends theprivate nursery in Liverpool. Three-year-old Alessio Chi YeungCastellari Tang has epilepsy, hypotonia (low muscle tone), an enlargedliver and spleen, and many allergies.

When Alessio's mum Georgina Tang contacted the nursery, she had alreadybeen turned away by several others. "When she contacted us, we invitedher into the nursery and she went through everything with us," revealsMcDonald. "We said 'we're willing to do whatever is needed'."
