What's it like to be a children's social worker? Jo Stephenson followed a practice manager and a frontline worker in Tower Hamlets, east London, to find out what their jobs involve.

Sabina Yesmin, practice manager, integrated pathway and support (IPS) team, Tower Hamlets

8am IPS is the first place for all referrals to children's services. Sabina's first task is going through any that came in overnight. On a busy morning there can be up to 40 from the police alone. Today there are 35 faxes and emails.

9am The duty team arrives and Sabina allocates work, highlighting any urgent cases. The team includes family support workers, education and housing specialists and qualified social workers. Sabina matches cases to their skills. "Generally I leave them to make their own judgments," she says. "But if it's a complex case I may make some notes."
