2 mins read
When you're planning a big change in the way services are delivered it is essential to get your workforce on board, asserts Carolyn Martin, early years and childcare services manager at Edinburgh City Council.

"The most important resource we have is our staff, so in planningfundamental changes in services we have to bring them along with us,"she says. The change she is talking about is the major drive towardsintegrated working in children's services.

Edinburgh has already merged education and social services to make asingle children, young people and families department.

And on top of this, it has divided the city into five neighbourhoods, each with a manager and a team of staff combining expertise fromeducation, children and family support, community learning anddevelopment, social work and "working together" services.

The aim is to increase local decision-making with a goal of having fullyintegrated working within two to three years, explains Martin.
