EDINBURGH POISED TO SHUT SCHOOLS AND EARLY YEARS CENTRES

Sixteen schools and five early years centres could be closed across Edinburgh as part of plans to modernise services.

The City of Edinburgh Council is to debate the move at a meeting later this week. If approved the schools, early years centres and also some community centres will be shut. The money saved will be reinvested in other schools and services for children.
The council decide to review services due to the decrease in the city's child population. The number of children attending schools has dropped by 18 per cent in the last 10 years.
Gillian Tee, director of children and families at the council, said: "We have carried out a major review of the city's school and education properties. Based on the data some difficult decisions are required so that we can balance the number of school places in each area with the number of pupils living there."
