As the new chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance he has been plunged into a world where huge opportunities and equally daunting challenges abound, including the thorny issue of workforce reform.
"We have at the moment people who make a determined choice to work in the early years sector and I would question why," he says.
"Why would you come into this setting where there are so many demands upon you in terms of legislation, inspection and responsibility for such poor reward?
"High levels of commitment from staff within early years mean it is bordering on exploitation."
Alexander, who has 28 years' experience in social care, has been on a fact-finding tour to help him develop a strategic plan for the alliance's future.
