That's the view of Andrew Fitzmaurice, chief executive of Nord Anglia Education, the UK's largest nursery group.
While he acknowledges the reality of future childcare is likely to be a "reasonable balance" of independent and state-subsidised provision, he's keen to ensure privately run nurseries aren't left out of shaping policy.
He says: "The vast majority of the provision of early years care is done by the private sector at the moment. I think that has to feature very highly in government thinking. We can see a variety of initiatives, such as Sure Start nurseries, setting up, but I think the Government recognises there is a key role for the private sector."
