Childcare: Nord Anglia nurseries unit figures show 0.6mloss

The nurseries and daycare arm of one of the UK's biggest childcare providers is in the red.

Nord Anglia's nurseries unit, which runs Leapfrog Day Nurseries andJigsaw, reported a loss of 0.6m in its interim figures for thesix months up to the end of February 2007. In 2006 the unit was 0.1m in profit and the nurseries division generated an annual turnoverof 23.4m - compared to 22m in the latest results.

Alan Kelsey, chair of Nord Anglia, said the performance in other areasof Nord Anglia's portfolio, such as international schools and learningservices, was excellent and the company anticipated that earningpredictions made at the beginning of the year would be met. Overall NordAnglia reported an operating profit of 2.5m.

But Andrew Fitzmaurice, chief executive of Nord Anglia, said as far asthe nurseries arm was concerned, the company would be staying cautious.Last year Nord Anglia closed five nurseries and another five were shutdown in January this year.
