Choosing what to eat and wear are basic choices, but enabling disabled children to influence these decisions takes a significant commitment from carers.

The John Waterhouse project in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, run by the children's charity NCH, has set challenging targets to ensure children's views are at the heart of care packages.

The project offers residential breaks for children aged five to 18.

All have severe learning or multiple disabilities and stay at the home several days a month to give their carers a break and to develop independent skills.
