Professionals turned to children for advice when it came to planning improvements at Somerville, the only adventure playground in the New Cross Gate New Deal area.
Though the park is a magnet for children, especially those from ethnic minorities, it has been in slow decline since its development by Kender Estate locals in the 1970s. So when the New Deal for Communities came up with initial funding and a host of experts including architect Sarah Featherstone, the missing element was the park users.
