However confident pre-school children are on their feet, they can always do with a little instruction. For 18 years, Stockport council has been encouraging borough-wide participation in toddler play schemes aiming to improve co-ordination and balance. Mini Movers, the latest incarnation, is now into its sixth year and still expanding.

Sessions start with a period of free play that allows interaction and makes the children feel comfortable with their surroundings. This is followed by a 15-minute session of skills learning.
