What it is: A 12-week health programme for obese children

Goal: To help children improve their diet, exercise more and increasetheir self-esteem

Funding: The project has no funding and relies on NorthamptonshireCounty Council and primary care trust staff doing the work on top oftheir existing jobs

Body4Life came into being 18 months ago after Northamptonshire CountyCouncil's leisure department teamed up with the county's primary caretrust to look at ways to reduce obesity among eight- to13-year-olds.

Children who are obese under the body mass index measure are referred toBody4Life via school nurses in Northampton and the surrounding area.

"We mainly get referrals from schools when they have concerns about aparticular child," says Kate Dowling, senior nurse advisor for schoolhealth at the primary care trust.
